Nestled in the heart of Silicon Alley, Postlight is a digital product studio that designs and builds both web and mobile app experiences for companies like Vice Media, Bloomberg and Sports Illustrated. In order to expand the team’s need for product management candidates, Postlight’s HR Director, Christine Morse, worked with SquarePeg’s team in adding another resource when it came to finding new product management candidates.

Not Everything That Glitters Is Gold

When hiring for quality and team fit, Postlight knows that a candidate's resume does not always tell the full story. Postlight aims to hit a "sweet spot mix of technical product management and client services with strong communication skills."

Postlight’s Christine Morse explains that although the team did have adequate inbound volume of highly qualified talent, candidates who entered the interview process weren’t always a “1-for-1 tradeoff of the type of product management that we were looking for.” This made SquarePeg’s personality assessment aspect interesting to Christine as the team explored different avenues for candidate sourcing as well as considering personality profiles, which tends to be “the hardest thing to glean from a resume.”

It was actually a really interesting moment for us as an organization too…now we have pen to paper on the types of things that we are looking for in candidates.       

Easy & Intuitive - Onboarding

“Super easy, super intuitive” is how Christine found SquarePeg’s onboarding, adding that “the profile didn’t take very long” – about an hour or less.  

“We had someone, a SquarePeg rep, there the whole time and they were extremely helpful. But even if we didn’t have a person, the process was pretty self explanatory. It was a really good working function for us to reflect on things that were important to us because we had so readily identified things that weren’t” adds Christine.

Exceeding Expectations

After receiving their initial 3 matches, the Postlight team went forward with one candidate that they felt was a good fit for the team’s long term goals. Although initially hired with limited on the job experience, the candidate exemplified what the team was searching for even having rather limited on the job experience. The match proved to be a success as the new hire was promoted after 3 months to a mid-level position within the organization and continues to add value to the team. Nowadays, they are working with some of the company’s most demanding clients – exceeding performance in both managing the product and managing relationships.

Christine believes SquarePeg helped to identify their new hire accurately, not only matching the new hire on skill, but also offering candidate assessments that the team found insightful and accurate.
